Slate Creek Preserve
Slate Creek Preserve is a private community-based non-profit organization active in the conservation of habitats of the Slate Creek and Upper Barton Creek in the Cayo District. The Preserve is made up of landowners in the region, representatives from neighboring villages, and consultants from the Belize Audubon Society. The Preserve boasts almost 1,500 hectares of protected privately owned land. In protecting these areas bordering the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve, Slate Creek Preserve is functioning as an important buffer for the Mountain Pine Ridge towards the south, and the Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve to the Northeast. Found within the Preserve are the Keel-billed Motmot, Jaguar, and other wild cats, Tapir, Kinkajou, Blue Morpho butterfly, numerous other birds, butterflies, and wildlife.

A History of Slate Creek Reserve
"The idea for Slate Creek Preserve was conceived in May 1990. After we moved to the area in 1989, it didn't take us long to realize that we would have to do something if we wanted the rainforests to still be there in the years to come"

The Murder of Harry the Howler
A True short story by Marguerite Bevis:
"Harry the Howler was a shy little Black Howler Monkey who used to live in our neighborhood. We never saw him, but our neighbors, Ben and Debbie and their kids saw him. I hear that Isabel saw him when she used to live here. Sam saw him three times in the twelve years he's been working here and Nancy even spoke with him once, or so Sam says. Once a Prime Minister even honored Harry with an audience. These are the only ones I know of whoever had the privilege of meeting Harry; I never did. I just loved him"

Ecotourism (Understanding Nature As It Should Be) is the "catch word" for ecology-minded tourists who are familiar with Belize. The concept of responsible tourism -- visiting of the world's natural places in a manner that will not endanger the flora, fauna or culture -- has been promoted in Belize through the dedication of numerous conservation groups. With the formation of the Belize Ecotourism Association (BETA), the process of developing sustainability has been accelerated.
