Hiking, Bird and Butterfly Watching

We offer several choices of hiking trails available with or without guides that you can walk for a half an hour, half a day or all day using our trail map to the destinations. The trails feature exotic rainforest plants, orchids, bromeliads, and abundant birdlife and butterflies.

Birders will undoubtedly be able to add to their life lists, as we have identified over 240 species of birds within Slate Creek Preserve alone. These include three species of Toucans, many Hummingbirds, migratory birds, raptors, and Tanagers, Orioles, Oropendolas, Parrots, and more. The Vega is the habitat of the endangered Keel-billed Motmot, which will be of special interest to avid birdwatchers.

Butterfly enthusiasts will enjoy the multitudes of species of butterflies found on the grounds and under the canopy. The Blue Morpho can be seen frequently while strolling along the trails and occasionally, lucky observers will see the rare White Morpho.  Just across the road, only about 15 minutes by foot is located Belize’s largest live butterfly display.  At Green Hills Butterfly Ranch and Biological Collections, Flocks of butterflies, from brilliant blue to gorgeous orange, dazzling yellow to intriguing gray, fly freely in a 2,700 sq. ft., beautifully landscaped flight area.
